126213 John Tinturff Sevier to Dr. Lyman Draper

Col. Chs. Robertson-Capt. Robt. Sevier & descendants.

Brownsville, Tenn. May 15th 1854

Dear Sir

I have read two letters written / by you to My Father Charles Sevier asking / for information about his Grand Father Col. / Charles Robertson & others.

I have been trying / to get some items of information that / would be of service to you & to their / Memory, but My Fathers Mind is so far / gone & his Memory so short that the can / give nothing satisfactory on the subject, nor do I know of any one who can.

My Father sais [sic] his Grand / Father died about fiftysix [sic] years ago in / Washington Co. E. Tenn. at the age of 84. / & was buried in Jonesboro he was a soldier / of the Revolutionary War & was with my / Grand Father who was a Captain & was / wounded from which he died on his / way home from Kings Mountain. there / was five Brothers of his in the Battle Col / John Sevier Commanding My Grand Father / left two sons My Father who is living with / Me & Valentine who died on the 24 March / lived in Greenville East Tennessee aged 73.

I should feel proud if I Could give / you such information as woul [sic] do them / Justice for it never has been done by / any Historian yet & I fear it is too / late now to be done as it should be.

I had intended to write / to My Uncle in Greenville on the subject / to see if he could send you any [sic] but / he is Now No More having lately died / as stated above.

I do not know of / any one of the relatives living now / that could give the assined [sic] information / My Father had an Uncle Geo. Robertson living in Hardeman County West Tenn / but he has been dead Many Years I / visit with one of his sons a firm day / since but he could tell Nothing as / to the old Pioneers of E. Tenn.

Note by Tom Robertson: Although Sarah Foster Kelley and others have used this document to determine 126 Colonel Charles Robertson's birth year, the Bristol Parish birth and christening records have proved to be a much more reliable source.
